老司机福利网鈥檚 School of Education is pleased to announce that Kelly Ivy is joining the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program as a visiting faculty member this fall.
As a new faculty member in the School of Education, Ivy will teach courses in and
help coordinate the expanding SLU MAT program, which places alternatively-certified
teachers in public school classrooms in St. Louis and surrounding communities.
鈥淢y colleagues and I are thrilled that Kelly Ivy will join our faculty in the fall,鈥
said Gary W. Ritter, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education. 鈥淜elly brings an exciting
research agenda, a passion for mathematics education, and a desire to prepare teachers
to work with diverse learners in this region. Kelly is a native of St. Louis, and
we are thrilled to welcome her to 老司机福利网 where she can prepare students
to work in her hometown.鈥
Kelly Ivy has a broad array of teaching experiences and skills, including supervising
preservice teachers and counseling STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)
students at the collegiate level. Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Brantlinger, Ivy
will earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at the University of Maryland, College
Park in the fall of 2021. Prior to her doctoral studies, Ivy earned a B.S. in Mathematics
from Howard University.
Ivy鈥檚 dissertation study focuses on culturally relevant mathematics teaching, urban
education, and the process of teacher change. Her interest also extends to equity
in mathematics education, mathematics identity, and mathematics self-efficacy.
While completing her doctoral program, Ivy is working on multiple projects, studying
culturally relevant teaching practices in STEM classrooms, support for culturally
and linguistically diverse learners, and the recruitment and retention of African
American STEM majors in the teacher workforce.
In the future, Ivy hopes to research the STEM teaching identity of teachers, as well
as add to the research on the impact of culturally relevant mathematics teaching on
the academic achievement of Black and Latinx students.
Kelly Ivy also has a wide variety of teaching experiences with students ranging from
K-12 to collegiate level, a skilled grasp on educating preservice teachers on equitable
mathematics teaching to prepare them for statewide licensure exams and edTPA, a heart
for service, and a unique passion for equity and excellence in education.
I am delighted to join the SLU family and take part in research that positively impacts the St. Louis school community. I'm thankful for this opportunity because there's no place like home!鈥
