Fellowships chart a course to the pharmaceutical industry
Every year a growing number of doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) students are charting a bold path, one that leads straight to the pharmaceutical industry. Pacific鈥檚 Fellowship in Industry Program (FIP) serves as a gateway to this dynamic world.
Chin Wong, PharmD, principle clinical scientist at Genentech, has been there from the beginning when FIP launched in 2017 with a partnership with industry leader Genentech.
鈥淢y passion for training fellows comes directly from my own experience,鈥 said Dr. Wong. 鈥淚 was fortunate to have a phenomenal preceptor who guided me in finding my own path. That experience showed me the profound impact a mentor can have on a fellow鈥檚 career and confidence.鈥
In her role as the program mentor, Dr. Wong strives to be a guide and a trusted advisor as fellows transition from learner to an independent, innovative professional. Current fellow Jamie Ngai, PharmD has benefited from Dr. Wong鈥檚 mentorship.
鈥淒r. Wong has been my biggest advocate at Genentech when it comes to finding opportunities and increasing my visibility,鈥 said Dr. Ngai.
Dr. Wong shares her advice for PharmD graduates who aspires to join leading pharmaceutical companies: 鈥淪tay motivated, be curious and take initiative.鈥
Two former Genentech-Pacific fellows, Nicole Kim, PharmD and Colin Dimond, PharmD, now have impactful roles at Genentech. Taking ownership of their professional development was key to their success.
鈥淭hey approached every challenge with a curious and analytical mind,鈥 Dr. Wong said. 鈥淭heir willingness to engage in thoughtful dialogue and challenge the status quo made them valuable contributors to every team they were on. They didn鈥檛 just accept information; they actively processed it and used it to form their own well-reasoned perspectives.鈥
Patryk Klimek, PharmD, MBA, Andrew Occiano 鈥16, PharmD and Nicole Kim, PharmD attend a Fellowship in Industry Program mixer.
Fellowships offer a prime opportunity to build a professional network. By asking insightful questions that demonstrate curiosity and respect for others鈥 expertise, fellows can build genuine relationships with colleagues, mentors and senior leaders. One unique advantage of fellowships is the ability to explore different departments or research focus areas within a company.
鈥淚 enjoy having the flexibility to hop around different studies to gain different experiences,鈥 Dr. Ngai said. 鈥淚鈥檝e worked on different drug modalities, therapeutic areas and investigational medical devices. Drug development is a very experience-centric industry, having many different exposures is very helpful since I鈥檓 still early in my career.鈥
Pharmacists bring a powerful blend of clinical insights and patient-centered thinking to drug development. Today, FIP boasts 10 active fellows and 24 individuals who have completed fellowships and are now helping shape the next generation of therapeutics.
鈥淧artnering with 老司机福利网 has been an incredibly rewarding experience as our teams share the same core values and a commitment to providing fellows with the best opportunities available,鈥 Dr. Wong said.
